My daughter came home from school on St. Patrick's day and was super upset. When I asked her why, she said she must have been really bad. I was confused because she never gets in trouble at school. When I dug a little deeper, I found out she thought she had been bad because the leprechaun fairy didn't come to our house. She continued to tell me how the leprechaun fairy came to her friends house's and left toys AND clothes.
First of all, what the hell is a leprechaun fairy? Second, now I have to explain to my very Irish red headed daughter that she is amazing and a really good kid. But, the leprechaun fairy doesn't come to our house. Maybe her friends needed some luck and we don't need it because we have so much else to be thankful for.
I mean I thought I was winning mom of the year because I remembered to buy Lucky Charms for breakfast and I managed to find something green for each kid to wear. But flipping presents for St. Patrick's Day?

This got me thinking about how out of control holidays have gotten (in my opinion.) My kids have friends who get presents for everything. Bikes for Valentines Day. $20 from the tooth fairy. New clothes for May day (is that even a holiday?)
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a scrooge or anything. We do big birthdays and I love everything Christmas (just don't get me started on the damn elf on the shelf. I just can't. ) My family does a big Easter egg hunt every year & the girls get Easter baskets. I usually buy the girls something little on Valentines (like new socks or those $4 shirts from H&M.) We definitely celebrate national donut day. The tooth fairy brings a whole dollar (which I thought was even a little much.) We don't do the birthday elf (yeah, that's a thing) and we definitely don't to the damn leprechaun fairy.
I don't want my girls thinking that they get gifts for every holiday. The next thing you know they'll be expecting gifts from the Earth day fairy, the Fourth of July fairy and the Groundhog Day fairy.

What about the grocery store fairy? You were good at the grocery store?! Well here's a new Xbox to celebrate! Or the you were good for three hours in the car fairy? What about a you went to bed on time without throwing a fit fairy?
Since we're on a roll, can we put in a request for a wine fairy for us mama's? You make it through another crazy week and a bottle of wine just magically shows up? Now that I can get excited about.
Seriously though, I get how much fun it is celebrating the holidays with our kids. I'm all about doing crafts, cooking and decorating. Isn't that what it's about? Spending time with the ones that we love. Creating memories. I also get that each family has their own thing and we all need to respect each others choices. We just choose to keep it a little more simple around here.
